Missionvale Pre-School Teacher Fund – Year 1

TargetReached Button

Whilst the exchange rates did not work to our advantage we can confirm that there are now guaranteed funds to keep Loretta Jensen as a teacher at the school until at least August 2010.

Loretta is a teacher with a level 5 Early Childhood Diploma. This is the required qualification for the job.  Prior to taking up this position she was unemployed.

The classroom has been set up within the MCC school grounds, using a spacious room, with suitable cupboards etc . The classroom is a hive of activity. Currently 23 children are enrolled, with 2 six year olds, 15 five year olds and 6 four year olds. There are 13 boys and 10 girls.

TravelPledge and our industry supporters continue to support this project.

LOCATION

Missionvale, Port Elizabeth, South Africa

ORIGINAL PROJECT GOAL

To fund the employment of a pre-school teacher for 1 year at the Missionvale community centre. Located in the Missionvale Township, Port Elizabeth Eastern Cape, South Africa.

INCOME ACHIEVED – £1,909

DETAILS

The Missionvale pre-school ‘Play and Learn Centre’ will accommodate a minimum of 25 poor and vulnerable 5 year old children, born in 2004. These children are from a very disadvantaged area in Port Elizabeth as many of their parents are unemployed while others are illiterate. It hopes to get them ready for school the following year.

The Centre will serve the impoverished and poor Missionvale Community.

Around 120,000 people live in the township of Missionvale – most with no electricity, no individual water supply and no proper sanitation. Unemployment in the township is over 60% and is accompanied by the deprivations of hunger, alcohol abuse, TB and a high incidence of HIV/AIDS – this last of which affects some 70% of the population directly or indirectly.

The Missionvale Care Centre operates in the extremely poor informal shackland township of Missionvale in Port Elizabeth, South Africa – part of the wider Nelson Mandela Metropole. Sister Ethel Normoyle, founded it from humble beginnings, under a tree donated by a resident of Missionvale. It has grown into a Centre which provides love and care for the poor and destitute, with particular emphasis on those living with HIV/AIDS. It remains true to her original vision and is still directed by her and a Board of Directors.
